The biggest cyber threat facing UK financial services right now isn’t what most firms think

For years, the biggest cyber concerns facing financial services firms were ransomware, phishing and data breaches.  Those risks remain significant, but the threat landscape has evolved.

Today, the greatest cyber risk facing UK financial institutions is the combination of AI-powered cyberattacks, identity compromise and increasingly sophisticated criminal groups targeting the very systems firms rely on to operate securely. Recent threat intelligence shows attackers actively focusing on Microsoft 365 environments, Entra ID identity platforms, VPN infrastructure and high-value financial accounts.

The latest intelligence issued in early September highlights active exploitation of critical SonicWall vulnerabilities, growing ransomware activity from groups including Cl0p and Qilin, and the increasing use of AI to accelerate vulnerability discovery and attack execution.

Why financial services remain a prime target

Financial organisations hold some of the most valuable data available to cyber criminals:

Attackers know that financial firms have little tolerance for downtime. Every minute of disruption can impact customer confidence, operational resilience and regulatory obligations.

The rise of identity-based attacks

One of the most significant shifts in cybercrime is the move away from attacking networks and towards attacking identities.  Modern threat actors increasingly bypass traditional security controls by targeting user credentials, exploiting weaknesses in authentication processes and even circumventing multi-factor authentication through sophisticated adversary-in-the-middle phishing attacks.

In many cases, attackers don’t need to hack systems. They simply log in using stolen credentials.  And once inside a Microsoft 365 tenant, attackers can access emails, financial communications, customer information, contracts and payment approval processes, often remaining undetected for extended periods.

AI is changing the rules

AI is rapidly becoming a force multiplier for cyber criminals.  Threat intelligence and financial sector regulators have warned that adversaries are increasingly using AI to identify vulnerabilities faster, create more convincing phishing campaigns and accelerate attack development.  This dramatically shortens the time between a vulnerability being discovered and being actively exploited and the result is a threat landscape that moves faster than ever before.

The question every financial firm should be asking

Most organisations have invested in cybersecurity tools, but do they know how exposed their business is today?  Can an attacker bypass your MFA controls?  Would suspicious activity be detected quickly enough?  Are your identity controls, privileged accounts and Microsoft 365 environment configured to withstand modern attacks?  Could your organisation continue operating effectively if a significant cyber incident occurred tomorrow?

Cybersecurity is no longer solely an IT concern.

For FCA-regulated firms, cyber resilience now directly impacts operational resilience, client trust, business continuity and regulatory compliance.  Boards are increasingly asking for clear evidence that the organisation understands its cyber risk and has appropriate measures in place to manage it.

How Equity can help

At Equity, we work with financial services organisations to understand their current security posture, identify potential vulnerabilities and align cybersecurity controls with both operational and regulatory requirements.  Our approach goes beyond technology. We assess people, processes and platforms to provide a comprehensive view of cyber risk and practical recommendations for improvement.  If you’re unsure whether your current security controls would withstand today’s cyber threats, now is the time to find out.

Book a cyber security health check

The most dangerous cyber risks are often the ones organisations don’t know they have, so contact us for an independent review of your security posture and discover where potential vulnerabilities may exist before someone else does.
